Field Research Safety

Learning objectives

• Distinguish between your role and responsibilities as a field researcher (including reporting work-related incidents, injuries, or accidents) and the roles and responsibilities of the principal investigator and team leader.
• Recognize the importance of preparing for time in the field by obtaining appropriate medical treatment, including vaccinations; obtaining necessary travel documents, assembling the required personal protective equipment, and training for designated activities.
• Identify potential hazards involved in fieldwork and methods to prevent yourself from being injured.
• Recognize the unique risks involved in field research and the ways to help mitigate those risks, as well as actions to take in the event of an emergency.
