About Our Customer

One the most consistently interesting customers we work with is the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. PNNL, as it’s known, is where scientists solve some of our nation’s most challenging problems. PNNL is one of ten U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. Battelle—the world's largest independent scientific research and technology development organization—has operated PNNL for DOE and its predecessors since 1965.

Highlights

PNNL plays a significant role in developing new technology and houses some of the brightest people and most sophisticated research equipment on the planet. It’s a collaborative hub, PhD magnet, and the work is endlessly fascinating. An institution of this caliber must attract, retain and engage a highly talented workforce.

The Challenge

For more than ten years, PNNL new hires were provided with a Laboratory Orientation course that lasted three to four hours with content provided on a generic table-style content page, lacking luster and clearly outdated in comparison to the innovation taking place in the workplace. PNNL needed an employee engagement program to inspire world changing innovation from day one.

PNNL wasn’t sure how to identify and define their training requirements, such as what type of training would be most effective in terms of production value, content delivery and materials.

The Solution

After a training needs analysis revealed an online training program as the best fit solution. A self‐paced environment, where employees taking training as needed and as time allows, keeping interruptions to productivity to a minimum, and setting a standard for innovation. Using an interactive learning flipbook design to captivate employees' imagination, engaging them from the very start.

The Results

The new hire orientation was designed to support the Lab’s mission and vision, a requirement from PNNL. The flipbook also encouraged employee exploration and interaction, proving highly engaging and informative.
